A:Helmets are required for bicyclists in all of King County (including the City of Seattle). The violation is a civil infraction (ticket) and the base fine is $30. There are additional court costs of $51 added to the base fine amount, so the total is $81. All law enforcement officers have the authority to enforce this code -- police officers, sheriff's deputies, state patrol troopers, etc.

Billings is the only city in Montana to have adopted a City Ordinance requiring anyone under 16 years of age to wear a bicycle helmet. See Below for actual ordinance and violation of ordinance.

Billings, Montana City Code Sec. 24-605. Protective Bicycle Helmets Shall Be Worn.

(a) All individuals under sixteen (16) years of age while operating a bicycle upon any way in the city limits must wear a protective bicycle helmet of good fit which is securely fastened to the operator's head.

(b) It is unlawful for any parent or legal guardian of a person under sixteen (16) years of age to permit such person to operate or be a passenger on a bicycle or on any attachment to a bicycle upon a way unless at all times when the person is so engaged he or she wears a protective bicycle helmet of good fit, which is securely fastened to such person's head."

Violation of this article is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than five hundred dollars ($500.00), or by imprisonment not to exceed six (6) months, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
